What to wear for your Family Photo Shoot!

It’s so exciting, you’ve booked your shoot, you’ve set the date and now you are wondering, what do we wear!!?? Planning for a family photo shoot can be both exciting and a bit daunting, especially when it comes to what to wear! Over the years, I’ve learnt a thing or two about how to help your family look their best! Below are some helpful tips to keep your shoot stress free and looking amazing!

Coordinate, Don’t Match!

Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical outfits for family photos. Instead, aim for coordination by choosing a colour palette or theme that complements each other. Consider selecting a few key colours and incorporating them into each family members outfit. This creates harmony but doesn’t look matchy-matchy!

Keep it Simple.

Choose classic clothing that will remain timeless in your photographs. Keep clothing simple and stay away from any clothing with written logos or busy patterns as they can detract from the overall aesthetic of your shoot.

Choose your Colours…

Choose your favourite three colours and stick within variations of that. Wear colours that compliment each other. For example you can all wear soft earthy beach colours or mix neutrals with an accent colour or two. Coordinate and try not to match.

Accessorise & Embrace Layers & Textures.

Adding layers and textures to outfits can elevate your look. Think about using accessories. Hats, sunnies, scarves, cardigans, statement jewellery or wearing something sentimental can be nice. Kids favourite toys are always beautiful in your photos too.

Helpful tip… Finally, lay out everyone’s clothes. Do you see anything that doesn’t fit within the theme or colour tones? Is there something that is brighter or more dominant than other clothes? If so, swap to something else. On the whole, you will want a smart casual feel for relaxed family portraits. You want to look like yourselves, just with a little extra sparkle!

Favourites… sparkly pretty dresses, the soft natural colours of the beach, bare feet and pops of colour! Bright fun colours or neutrals with lots of textures, your child’s special cute toys… I LOVE a hat and family pets are always very welcome!
